The Art of Poetry

Poetry was never my strong suit in school. It always seemed too corny or too deep for my liking. And although I believe in a love-throughout-the-year motto, we can’t deny that February abounds with love, hearts, chocolate and, yes, poetry. So I dusted off my beret and sat down to pen these heart-warming odes to our February issue.

Roses are red,

Violets are blue,

Lilies are toxic

To your cats, and dogs, too.

If you love the poem above, be sure to visit page 22 to read “Roses are Red, Violets are Blue and Lilies are Toxic” from our friends at Neighbourhood Pet Clinic.

Marigolds are orange,

Lilacs are violet,

Don’t let yourself get “hangry”,

Take care of your diet.

Wondering about my literary use of the word “hangry”? Check out page 7’s “Beyond Hangry: Mental Health and Diet” to find out more.

Sunflowers are yellow,

Jasmine is white,

Surprise your Valentine

With a chocolate-covered delight!

Did I have you at “chocolate-covered”? Find our yummy recipe on page 14.

Tulips are purple,

Carnations are pink,

Praising kids too much

Is worse than you think.

Hey mamas and papas! Need to find out what this is all about? Read “Praise with Purpose” on page 12.

Hydrangeas are green,

Hibiscus is peach,

Cupid shot me a divorce

But happiness is in reach!

Valentine’s Day isn’t just for those currently in a romantic relationship. Find out how love conquers all in

“When Cupid’s Arrow Sends Divorce Papers” (p. 20)

Here’s hoping my poetic liberties have inspired you to show, share and feel the love this month. On a parting note, remember that one of the most important kinds of love to strive for this month is self-love!
