Jameson’s Journey

My husband and I were over the moon when we celebrated the arrival our second child. Following the failure of his infant hearing screen, that joy and excitement was overshadowed when we learned that our son was born with profound sensory neuro hearing loss. It was a difficult time for us as we tried to wrap our heads around what this meant for our son’s future.

We were referred to the London Health Sciences Centre where we learned about the cochlear implant program and the potential for our son to hear. As a family, we made the decision to pursue cochlear implants for our son. The process involved a thorough evaluation to determine if he was a candidate for the procedure, as well as counseling and preparation to ensure the best outcome. At the age of one, he underwent the implant surgery and began the journey of learning to hear.

Over the past two years, our son has made incredible progress with the help of a speech language pathologist and dedicated staff at his daycare centre. He has learned to speak and communicate with us, his family and friends. We have had the privilege of watching him grow into a social butterfly. His language development is a testament to the success of the cochlear implant program and the hard work and dedication of his medical team and incredible daycare staff. We are so proud of our son and his accomplishments. Our journey has been filled with ups and downs, but through it all, we have learned to cherish every moment, every word, every “I love you” and every laugh. We are grateful.

We know that there are many families who are facing similar challenges and we want to share our story of hope and perseverance. We believe that every child deserves the chance to hear and communicate, and with the right support and technology, it can be possible. Our son is proof of that. We are so grateful for the journey and are looking forward to watching our son continue to grow and flourish.
