Nature’s Paintbrush

As the warm weather fades and we begin to brace ourselves for the chill of winter, it’s the perfect time to squeeze out every last bit of sunshine.

This activity is all about exploration and expression! There’s no pressure to focus on the final product. Children of all ages will love the freedom of this art process, which allows them to build their creativity and artistic skills as they make and then paint with “nature’s paintbrushes”!

Start with a nature walk, and talk about finding sticks that are just right—not too long, not too short, not too thick, not too thin. Think of it like Goldilocks finding the perfect porridge. Once you’ve found a few ideal sticks, encourage your child to tap into their imagination and search for interesting items to attach to the ends as nature paintbrushes. Grasses, leaves, pine needles, berries—the possibilities are endless.

After you’ve gathered your materials, you can attach them to the sticks using rubber bands, string, or twine. And then, it’s time to create! Watch how different “brushes” leave unique textures and patterns on the page.
