Ice Cube Excavation

Beat the heat with this super fun activity! In a medium container, add some objects, such as sea creatures and a little food colouring, and then place it in your freezer overnight.

(On Day 2, we added more creatures and more coloured water so the items would freeze in a different layer of ice!)

What you will need: eye protection (sunglasses make great safety glasses); a small hammer; a chisel or small screwdriver; a bottle with warm water; a bowl with salt and a little spoon.

Adults can demonstrate how to tap on the top of the chisel with the hammer to crack the ice. This is a great hand-eye coordination activity.

Sprinkling salt on the ice is a great experiment and allows your child to see how it will start to melt the ice. The spray bottle will also help speed up the melting process.

It is great to just sit back and observe how they move to uncover their hidden sea creatures, discover the cause and effect of their efforts, and figure out what approach works best!

Once completely frozen, the excavation can begin!
