Tips for a Smooth Orthotics Appointment
Whether it’s your first time visiting the clinic or you’ve been here before, preparing for your orthotics appointment can help the day run more smoothly, especially when kids are involved. At Custom Orthotics of London, we know new places and unfamiliar routines can sometimes feel overwhelming, so we’ve put together a few tips to help your child (and you!) feel comfortable and ready.
Timing is Everything: Book the appointment at a time of day when your child is rested and content. Avoid nap time or right before lunch, when little ones can get tired or hangry.
Don’t Forget the Paperwork: Pack any important documents (your child’s health card, referral or prescription if you have one, and any insurance or funding information like ADP forms). If you’re unsure about what to bring, give us a call — we’re happy to walk you through it.
Bring Your Old Orthotics: If your child has worn orthotics or braces in the past, bringing them along gives us valuable insight into what worked, or what didn’t.
Talk Ahead of Time: Kids do better when they know what to expect. A simple explanation like, “We’re going to a clinic where they’ll check how you walk and maybe take a look at your feet,” is usually enough.
Pack a Favourite Toy: Our clinic is designed to be welcoming and kid-friendly, but bringing along something familiar can be a big comfort. We also have books and toys on hand, and our friendly fish (Nemo and Dory!) love to say hello when you arrive.
Keep it Light: Kids pick up on our emotions, so staying calm and relaxed can make a big difference. You don’t need to have all the answers. Our team will guide you through every step.
End on a High Note: Once the appointment is done, plan something fun – a trip to the park, an ice cream stop, or just some extra cuddle time at home. It’s a great way to finish the day on a positive note without turning it into a reward system.
