Allergy Season – Nipping it in the Bud!

We wait all year for the spring and summer weather, only to be attacked by a barrage of grass and tree pollen in early summer, followed by ragweed in late summer. The symptoms of watery itchy eyes, sneezing, sore throat and cough, along with triggering of asthma for some people, can make one retreat indoors or spend the summer months in misery.

There are a number of therapeutic options including the use of over-the-counter antihistamines (there are many that are “second generation” and non-drowsy), prescribed nasal sprays and eye drops. In some cases, allergy testing followed by desensitization and allergy shots may be necessary.

There are many simple environmental changes that can also help:

  1. Watch the pollen count on the weather network and avoid going outside when pollen counts are high.
  2. Delegate lawn work such as weeding and lawn mowing as they may expose you to pollen.
  3. Shower and remove clothing when coming in from outside to remove allergens/pollen from skin, hair and clothing.
  4. The face mask that we used in the pandemic might also help lessen exposure to allergens.

Take some simple precautions and consult your primary care practitioner to decide if treatment is needed. Then get out there and smell the roses (but not the ragweed)!
