Canadian Cuisine? Yes, Please!

Happy July, London! There are so many reasons to celebrate with school being out, festival season at the Market, Canada Day and sun, sun and more sun! Canada Day has me thinking of our cuisine and recipes with which we could celebrate. Poutine is usually what comes to mind when we think of the quintessential Canadian dish, and for a good reason! The combination of fries, warm gravy and melted cheese curds is the ultimate comfort meal! So if you’re planning on making this iconic dish yourself, make sure to grab some cheese curds from Smith Cheese and let them know what you’re planning to cook! Our vendors love to hear what you’re making and are happy to give suggestions.

And if you need a Canadian drink, a classic Caesar is always a good idea! I love using The Hot Sauce Co. Peppers & Pickles hot sauce to spice up my Caesars and add a nice pickle flavour to the drink. You can find this hot sauce and other Hot Sauce Co. products from Chris’ Country Cuts right here in the Market. Speaking of Chris, there’s no one else that takes as much pride in his peameal bacon! Another Canadian classic, peameal bacon is a great addition to a Canada Day brunch and tastes amazing in a breakfast sandwich!

And, of course, we need something sweet to finish off the celebrations. Nanaimo bars are a no-bake dessert that has three tasty layers: graham wafer crumb and shredded coconut base, custard-flavoured butter icing and chocolate ganache. The treat is named after Nanaimo, British Columbia, and it’s considered Canada’s favourite dessert. Market Cafe carries this staple, along with lots of other baked goods made fresh! Another classic Canadian flavour is maple, which is a staple in many desserts. Havaris Produce carries lots of maple candies, including maple lollipops, maple-flavoured toffee, and so much more!

I always enjoy indulging in Canadian classics while celebrating on July 1st, especially in the company of family and friends. Happy Canada Day, London! We can’t wait to see you at the Market!
