Celebrating Glorious Summer

“The first week of August hangs at the very top of summer, the top of the live-long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning. The weeks that come before are only a climb from balmy spring, and those that follow a drop to the chill of autumn, but the first week of August is motionless, and hot. It is curiously silent, too, with blank white dawns and glaring noons, and sunsets smeared with too much color.” ― Natalie Babbitt, Tuck Everlasting

Well, here we find ourselves in the middle of glorious summer! I am so excited that our August issue is a pure celebration of all things summer, so let’s don our flip flops, slather on some sunscreen, and dive right into these summery pages!

Spending time in the pool or lake this month? Keep safety (and your kids!) within arm’s reach with swimming tips from Public Health Nurse, Meagan Melling, on page 6.

Is your kid a nature nut? Find out how many hours our resident kid experts think you should be spending outdoors this season on page 11.

Berries, apples, pears, plums, green beans, cabbage, carrots, rhubarb… Are we making you hungry yet? Read “Eat Local this Summer” for five tips to get you filled up with summer’s delicious bounty (page 22).

Bathing suit woes? Set your worries aside and find your confidence to rock who you are right now! I hope I can inspire even just one of you with my personal article on page 21.

Still looking to fit in a summer getaway? Sherri Telenko had me at pancakes! Our travel guru talks Pancake Bay, Ontario where you’ll find yurts, Voyageur tales and pancakes, of course! (Learn more on page 14)

So if swimming, nature walks, summer treats and travel don’t fill up your August, maybe reading will. I highly recommend Tuck Everlasting (our beginning quote is from this novel) for you AND the kiddos. But certainly leave time to vote for your favourites in our 15th annual Captured Moments Photo Contest. Voting takes place August 12-18 at www.themomandcaregiver.com. Here’s to an awe-inspiring August!
