Do You Want to Become a Lifeguard?

Swimming at the Y is about more than just being active or learning techniques and skills. Whether you are participating in our aquatics programming or are a part of our staff, swimming at the Y is about building friendships, developing self-esteem and creating positive experiences. We are proud to offer a wide range of programming that allows participants of all ages and skill levels to set goals, achieve success and learn water safety while enjoying the benefits of swimming.

Children are able to start experiencing the benefits of Y aquatics from as young as three months old at our Splashers swimming lessons. For our older members, our branches offer their own schedule of programs including AquaFit and lane swim. Additionally, youth are able to explore aquatic leadership courses that help them become more comfortable in the water while learning valuable skills.

The Y is excited to be able to offer these courses free of charge to youth who would like to become a lifeguard and/or swim instructor but cost is a barrier. Thanks to funding provided by JumpStart, the Y can enroll 50 youth to go through courses including Bronze Medallion, First Aid & CPR, Bronze Cross, National Lifeguard, Swim Instructor and Lifesaving Instructor.

Throughout these aquatic leadership courses, participants will receive the knowledge they need to guard or teach effectively and will also have opportunities to increase their leadership, teamwork and problem-solving skills.

Applications are being accepted now until spaces fill up! Contact Denis at denis.giles@swo.ymca.ca for application information.
