Getting Ready for Halloween… And Winter!
As much as we may not want to admit it, fall is here. Although spring is a common time of year for many homeowners to put extra time into home maintenance and preparation for summer, fall is equally as important as we prepare for the winter months ahead.
There are many easy steps one can take to prepare for the winter and what mother nature may throw your way.
- As the leaves start to fall from the trees, do a regular check to make sure your gutters are clear of any fallen leaves and debris.
- Contact your trusted HVAC contractor to have your heating system inspected to heat your home in the upcoming months. Additionally, make sure you change your furnace filter.
- If you have a wood burning fireplace, make sure your chimney is cleaned annually and that all flammable debris is kept clear of the fireplace.
- Make sure you check and test all smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in the home. This quick task can save lives.
- Check your pipes to make sure they are well insulated to prevent freezing over the harsh cold ahead.
- Turn off any water lines leading to the outside and store any hoses to prevent freezing.
- Do a walk around your house to check for any potential areas where rodents could sneak inside to warm up during the cold. If small cracks are located, contact a contractor or apply caulking to close up the gaps.
- Put away the patio furniture securely to make sure it does not blow away or cause damage in a wind storm.
In addition to the small tasks outlined above, there are some things you can do to prevent trip hazards or liability exposures around your home. These are especially important for Halloween.
- Make sure your laneway and walkways are well lit to prevent tripping.
- Ensure there are not any extension cords for exterior decorations or lights that could cause a trip and fall. Also ensure the extension cords are rated for exterior cold and moisture to prevent fires.
On top of all of these tips and maintenance ideas, make sure you take time to enjoy the beauty of fall with your family and friends!
