Kid Zone: Eat, Drink and Be Scary!

Meet 10 year-old twins, Charlie and Harrison, our new Kid Zone writers! Each month, they’ll be sharing perspectives on life as a child sees it.

What are the best costumes you’ve worn for Halloween?

Charlie-Our Halloween costumes from 2018 were epic! We dressed up as Axel and Slash from the music band Guns N’ Roses. We had to research what they looked like by watching music videos and look at old photos. We went to second-hand stores to buy pieces of the outfits and put it all together. I was Slash – he’s a very good guitarist. I love pumpkin carving too. Each year we have a contest to see who can carve the best jack o’ lantern!

Harrison – Last year we dressed up as Fred and George Weasley from Harry Potter. I was Fred, Charlie was George. It was a super easy costume because we had the robes and we already kind of look like them. The year before I was Axel Rose and Charlie was Slash from Guns N’ Roses. Some of our neighbours asked us to sing some of the band’s songs as a trick. We only really knew the words to Paradise City.

Why do you love this holiday?

Charlie – I love Halloween because you get to dress up and pretend you are someone else for the night while trick or treating. Our black cat Monty reminds me of Halloween every day.

Harrison – Halloween is super fun because first of all, you get candy. Second, you get to dress up. I love dressing up and seeing our neighbourhood friends dressed up too.

Do you think there’s an age where you’re too old to trick or treat/celebrate Halloween?

Charlie – 15 is probably a good age to stop because other people think it’s only for little kids. I think that people should be able to trick or treat at any age because it’s just as fun for grown-ups. Sometimes my parents dress up with us and we all go out together.

Harrison – No, there shouldn’t be. Halloween should be for everyone. It’s a fun celebration – it’s not just for kids. This year might be different because of Coronavirus. We have talked about having friends from our bubble over to have a party – play manhunt in costumes at night, have some Halloween games (like a Murder Mystery, Eye Ball Digging), maybe a pumpkin drop and watch scary movies! Either way would be fun.
