Love As Medicine

I’m Dr. Michelle, a family physician, caregiver coach and mom of two little girls.

My point is this: you are allowed to be on your own list. For example, here is a night I’ll never forget.

I was kneeling by the bath, four weeks after thyroid surgery, with my two toddlers splashing beside me. I had followed every instruction my doctors gave me and expected to be back at work already. But when my kids asked, as they always do, for a song and a story, I was reminded that my voice was gone and I didn’t know when it would return. I felt my throat tighten and my eyes sting. I had spent years being selfless as a wife and mother, just as my mom was before I lost her young, and my body had finally demanded I stop. So I kept following my doctors’ advice, and I added something to my treatment plan: love as medicine, beginning with the love I give myself.

A few years on, that choice has become The Joyful Rx Method™, your prescription for joy. My voice came back. My kids are happier and more resourceful, and now they remind me of the lessons I taught them.

I don’t know what your particular chaos looks like, only mine. I do know we all need a village, and I’d love to be part of yours. Start by tuning into The JoyfulRx podcast where we explore topics relevant to moms and caregivers each week. Then email your questions or topics to info@joyfulrx.ca (I read every one).
