Navigating Holiday Eating with Balance and Joy
It’s my favorite time of the year! I find this season to be filled with joy, warmth and, of course, food! From cozy family dinners and social events, to special moments with the kiddos, December is a month to savour. But even with all that joy, many find it challenging to balance festive treats with their usual routines. Here are my top five tips to help you enjoy the season mindfully without feeling like you’re missing out.
- Prioritize what you love
Identify those foods you truly enjoy versus those that you might eat out of habit. Focus on unique, seasonal treats rather than everyday items available all year. This approach allows for satisfaction without overindulgence. - Practice portion awareness
Holiday foods are meant to be enjoyed, but portion control can help maintain balance. Try using a smaller plate, savoring each bite, and putting down utensils between bites to slow down and appreciate the flavors. - Don’t skip meals
Skipping meals to “save up” for a big holiday dinner often backfires. Regular, balanced meals throughout the day keep energy levels steady and reduce the likelihood of overindulging later. - Be mindful of beverages
Holiday drinks can be packed with sugar and calories. Alternate sugary or alcoholic beverages with water or choose lighter options where possible. Staying hydrated is key! - Embrace the power of pause
Remember to pause and check in with hunger levels during meals. Listen to your body and stop when you feel comfortably full, even if there’s more food on the table.
Enjoying food is part of the celebration, and finding a balance can help you enter the New Year feeling good. I hope everyone has a joyful, nourishing December filled with moments to savor—both on the plate and beyond!
