Pet insurance: A Game-Changer for Families

As a parent, your days are a whirlwind of managing schedules, juggling responsibilities, and, of course, ensuring your loved ones are cared for — including your pets, who are part of the family too! But what happens when your dog swallows a sock or your cat suddenly can’t walk? That’s where pet insurance can be a lifesaver.

Many pet parents are shocked to learn that pet insurance even exists! Just like humans, most dogs and cats get sick or injured throughout their lifetime. Pet insurance is there to help manage costs when these situations arise. For a manageable monthly or annual fee, pet insurance will reimburse you for certain medical expenses depending on your policy.

For example, say you choose a $40/month policy with 80% coverage and a $100 deductible. If your little one requires a $1000 procedure at your local veterinary clinic, you’ll get $700 reimbursed. That buffer can make a huge difference for a family’s finances.

Keep in mind that just like humans, veterinary care doesn’t stop at the “family doctor”. For complex cases, your little one could require a referral to a specialist. Did you know that pets have neurologists, cardiologists, orthopedic surgeons, and internal medicine specialists too? For many families, pet insurance puts access to this extended care within reach, so that you don’t have to think twice about getting your dog or cat the treatment they need.

Most policies don’t cover pre-existing conditions, so the earlier in your pet’s life you enroll them, the better your coverage will be. Therefore, the best time to consider pet insurance is when your pet is young and healthy… but the second-best time is now!

Some popular options for pet insurance include Trupanion, PetSecure, or PetsPlusUs. If you already have a policy for a car, home, tenant, or business insurance, inquire with them about pet insurance too! You may be eligible for a loyalty discount. Even CAA and Costco offer discounted options for members.

Typically, these policies just cover accidents and illnesses. For routine care, your veterinarian may offer packages to help you prepare for the more predictable expenses, such as vaccinations and annual health exams.

Pet insurance isn’t just a safety net; it’s an investment in your peace of mind that your family can handle a surprise medical expense without compromising on your little one’s care.
