Plant a Garden, Believe in Tomorrow

Gardening with children is a wonderful way to spend quality family time and teach your children about nature and the environment. Gardening can provide many benefits for children, including physical, emotional and even cognitive development.

Gardening is a great form of exercise that can help children develop skills. Digging, planting and weeding are all physical activities that require hand-eye coordination and strengthen muscles. Gardening can also help children learn about healthy eating habits and encourage them to try new foods. By growing their own fruit and vegetables, children can have a greater appreciation for the nutritional value of fresh produce. Planting flowers is a great way to learn about plant life cycles, the importance of pollinators, and the balance of a garden eco-systems.

Gardening can also have a positive impact on a child’s emotional well-being. Spending time outdoors and connecting with nature has proven to help reduce stress and anxiety. It can also boost mood and promote feelings of happiness. Gardening is a therapeutic activity that can help children learn to cope with difficult emotions and supports bonding between the child and those they are with.

Gardening is a hands-on experience that can help children learn about the life cycle of plants, the importance of water and sunlight, and the impact of weather on growth. Getting outside provides opportunities for children to practise mindfulness. Try looking for tiny bugs, identifying leaves and collecting stones, or try looking for items that are all the same size, shape or colour. This is a great activity that can be adapted for any age, and helps develop patience and appreciation for being present in nature.

To start gardening with your children, you don’t need a lot of space or equipment. A small garden bed or containers on a balcony or windowsill can provide enough space for a few plants. Involve your children in the planning process by allowing them to choose which plants to grow and where to plant them. Encourage your children to take responsibility for watering and caring for the plants.

Get outside this summer to create memories and experiences that will last a lifetime!
