Small Adjustments Ease Transition

As summer gives way to fall, many of us experience mixed emotions. While some welcome the return of routine, others notice they feel more overwhelmed, impatient or unlike themselves as schedules become busier again. Whether it is back to school, work, caregiving responsibilities or simply a full calendar, transitions ask our minds and bodies to adapt, and that adjustment can take time.

It is not uncommon during periods of change for adults and children alike to become more irritable or emotionally reactive. Our nervous systems naturally prefer predictability, so even positive changes require extra mental and emotional energy. Children often express this through their behaviour, and a reminder I often come back to is that kids are not giving adults a hard time, they are having a hard time. Understanding that everyone adjusts differently allows us to respond with a little more patience and compassion, including toward ourselves.

Rather than changing everything at once, small adjustments can help ease the transition. For younger children, that might mean moving bedtime a little earlier before school begins. For adults, it may be finding one simple habit that brings consistency, such as reading before bed or stretching after waking up. Small routines help signal safety and stability when life feels more demanding.

Personally, I always feel a little sadness when summer begins to wind down. I miss the slower pace and spontaneous beach days, yet every year our family finds its rhythm again. I have learned that welcoming routine does not mean leaving summer behind. We can still enjoy evening BBQs, weekend beach days and sometimes squeeze in a short camping trip in September! Just as the seasons change gradually, we can give ourselves permission to adjust gradually too.
