Transforming Lives: Orthotic Care in Jamaica
For children facing physical challenges, something as simple as walking or standing can feel like an impossible dream. Twice a year, our team travels to Jamaica to make that dream a reality. In partnership with a dedicated clinic, the Jamaican Rotary, and local volunteers, we provide free orthotic care to children under 10, helping them gain mobility, independence and confidence.
Our work focuses on orthotic bracing, including devices like ankle-foot orthotics (AFOs), knee-ankle-foot orthotics (KAFOs), back braces and wrist braces. These custom-fitted supports are essential for children with conditions such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida and other orthopedic challenges. They stabilize, align and empower children to move more freely and participate in everyday life.
The clinic, based in Negril, owes its success to the vision of a retired orthopedic nurse who spent decades running pediatric clinics in England. Alongside her, local volunteers have been trained in brace repairs and clinic management. Support from the RUI Hotel and contributions from volunteers like us ensure that this life-changing care reaches those who need it most.
Overcoming Challenges
Each clinic visit brings its own unique hurdles. With so many children in need, ensuring we have the correct braces, sufficient pairs of socks and appropriately sized footwear is a constant challenge. Many of the children we see lack even basic shoes, making it difficult to fit their braces properly.
This is where our local community in London, Ontario, plays a vital role. Generous donations have helped us overcome these obstacles and extend care to more children.
How You Can Help
You can be part of this transformative mission. Donations of the following items make an enormous difference:
- New or gently used children’s socks
- Shoes, especially those that can accommodate orthotic braces
- Orthotic devices or components that are no longer in use but could be repurposed
By contributing these items, you help ensure that each child we serve has the tools they need to thrive. Together, we can create a world where every child has the opportunity to move through life with confidence, dignity and ease. Contact the clinic to organize a drop off of new or gently used shoes and/or new socks.
