BHAGs & Big Panties

Ah, January – a month that used to taunt me with its resolutions and promises of change. Last year, I scoffed at the idea of setting goals that I believed would go unrealized and only lead to disappointment. But life, in its unpredictable ways, had a surprise waiting for me last year, one that altered my perspective entirely and reshaped not only my life but my family dynamics in the most unexpected and yet beautiful ways.

The onset of January brought not just a new year, but a pink slip from work. It was the catalyst for a transformation I never knew was possible. Amidst the initial shock and a brief pity party, I rose donning my “big girl panties,” and began charting my BHAGs – Big Hairy Audacious Goals – socially, emotionally, physically and professionally.

Fast forward, and here I stand astounded by the journey upon which I’ve embarked. Shedding a remarkable 100-pound natural weight loss, attaining a master’s degree, initiating a health and wellness venture, drafting two chapters of a book, laying the groundwork for an innovative app, and nurturing a dedicated online community – these accomplishments sit proudly on my figurative triumph shelf.

But as they say, the unspoken victories are often the most profound. The healing that took place within me, untangling the knots of past traumas, has been the unsung hero of this journey. Through this process, I’ve learned to quiet the harsh inner dialogue, tame my inner critic, and cultivate self-compassion. The baggage has lightened, making space for increased confidence and a significant reduction in stress and anxiety. More importantly, these transformations have breathed new life into my relationships.

My daughter, inspired by my journey, forged a new relationship with food, opting for healthier choices, which has transformed her well-being and physique. Equally heartening is my partner’s choice to include more activity in his routine, which has given us a new shared passion. But most surprising are the friends and strangers who reach out and share their stories of how my transformation has inspired them.

So, here’s to January – no longer the month of daunting resolutions, but a canvas for hope, resilience, gratitude and possibility.
