Keep Your Kids Hydrated!

Hydration is key all year round – but keeping your kids hydrated during the hot summer months is especially important. Kids often don’t recognize when they are thirsty if they are busy and having fun. This makes them particularly vulnerable to dehydration on hot days, especially when active outside. Proper fluid intake is important for so many bodily functions. For example, it helps with digestion and to control body temperature.

Here are my top three tips for keeping your kids hydrated this summer:

  1. Keep it fun! Buy reusable water bottles that are labelled for your kids and keep them full and accessible at all times. You know the saying “out of sight, out of mind”. The same applies to water! Jazz it up and keep it fun by adding frozen berries, cucumber or mint to the bottle.
  2. Keep your options open! Although water is a great source for staying hydrated all day, it doesn’t have to be the only way your kids can stay hydrated. Milk or unsweetened, fortified plant-based beverages are also great options. Homemade smoothies are too! We like to freeze our extra smoothies into popsicles for those super scorcher days.
  3. Snack on veggies and fruits! I know you’ve heard this one before. Veggies and fruits are not just powerhouses when it comes to things like vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytochemicals and fibre. They are also very hydrating. Who doesn’t love cold watermelon on a hot day, right?! There are so many options from which to choose. My fav veggie snack on a hot day is cold and crisp radishes! What’s yours?
