Stumbling Through the Stands
I would use the term “hockey mom” loosely in reference to myself (seriously, I’m still struggling with “offside” after four years). I’m knee-deep in the world of minor girls’ hockey. And let me tell you, it can get downright political. It’s a raucous arena where parents are literally battling for the belief that their child is the next Wayne Gretzky or Hayley Wickenheiser. But amongst all that chaos, it’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture – what our kids really stand to gain from sport.
Instead of fixating on dreams of scholarships and “the show”, we should champion the lessons that the incredible female athletes leading the way instill in our children. Just look at the Canadian Women’s Olympic Rugby Team, Caitlin Clark or the stars of the PWHL. These athletes are breaking barriers and redefining what it means to be a female athlete today. They embody the hunger, discipline, drive and determination that come with pursuing any sport, and they are changing the values of an entire generation.
Playing sports teaches our kids character, teamwork, and leadership. It fosters resilience when they wipe out or miss a play. And while it’s natural to dream big, we should remember that the true measure of success isn’t just about trophies or titles; it’s about the qualities they develop along the way—the ability to work as part of a team, to support one another, and to learn that it’s not always about winning but about showing up and giving it your all.
And as I stumble through the stands, asking for clarification on what “icing” means, I find comfort in knowing that my daughter is surrounded by incredible female role models who emphasize these values – women who are strong, determined and unapologetic about their bodies and abilities. They’re not just athletes but ambassadors for a new wave of sportsmanship that celebrates strength in all its forms and encourages our girls to be fearless.
And as I continue to cheer, I know I’m more invested in my daughter’s growth as a person than I am as an athlete. GO TEAM GO!
