October: A Month for the Kid in All of Us

I fell in love with fall when I was young. And it’s no wonder – October is surely a month for the kid in all of us. There are crisp cooler days made for walking the neighbourhood to admire the changing leaves and feel the crunching under my feet.

Thanksgiving means delicious food (bring on the pumpkin pie topped with a big dollop of whipped cream!) and time to be grateful (I’ve been keeping a gratitude journal with three things I’m thankful for each morning). And of course, there’s the childhood-favourite, Halloween! I adore the playful spirit that comes with dressing up and eating treats. Let’s all get creative with ways to celebrate this spooky holiday during a unique year.

It’s a big month for the kids of The Mom & Caregiver family as well. We bid a very fond farewell to Mikaeel Manji and Ella Warkentin, who have been writing our Kid Zone column since its inception in February 2018. We have followed them through grades six, seven and eight, and they excitedly began a new chapter of their lives when they started high school last month.

We are so thrilled to announce our new Kid Zone authors, Charlie and Harrison. We first met these 10-year-old twins when they appeared on our February 2020 cover, and we noticed they were full of a love for life! You won’t want to miss their introductory Halloween article.

If you’re looking to feel cozy and comforted this season, our delicious soup recipes will surely fit the bill. Chef Devan shares a Roasted Butternut Squash, Turmeric and Carrot Soup  (these flavours are right up my alley), and Registered Dietician Jenn gives us an Easy and Delicious Creamy Asparagus Soup!

We’ve really enjoyed cozying up to look through the amazing photos you’ve entered in our 16th annual photo contest. Remember you still have until October 9th to enter. And come back from October 16th – 23rd to vote for your fave.

All of us here at The Mom & Caregiver truly want to send you all the warmth, support and love we can this season. We know that these times are unprecedented, and we hope your families are coping well and can find time to celebrate everything October brings!
